Is your doctor on board?

Did you know that 70 percent of Americans believe in the positive effects of complimentary and alternative medicine? But unfortunately, less than 50 percent of doctors discuss alternative therapies with their patients.

What about your doctor?

Here are some reasons why your doctor should embrace holistic health care:

Alternative practitioners can take the time to determine the root causes of chronic illness.

Today’s insurance-based medical climate often doesn’t allow physicians enough time to properly diagnose and treat the true causes of disease. The majority of physicians spend between 13 to 20 minutes with each patient. Contrast this with functional medicine practitioners, who often take upwards of an hour with each patient to determine the underlying root causes of their chronic disease. Indeed, many of these patients seek out alternative practitioners specifically because traditional medicine only provides treatments for their symptoms, not solutions for their disease.

Food can be used as medicine.

Although a recent study revealed that only 27% of U.S. medical schools teach a course on nutrition, we are becoming more aware that food can be used to prevent and even cure disease. This fact is supported by Medicare, which provides reimbursement for heart disease patients who undergo Dr. Dean Ornish’s plant-based program. In addition, Kaiser Permanente, the largest HMO in the United States, endorses a plant-based diet, stating, “Physicians should consider recommending a plant-based diet to all their patients.”

Alternative therapies are reversing autoimmune disease

Autoimmune diseases can be frustrating and difficult to treat. Most of the current medical therapies, such as steroids, are poorly tolerated and filled with side effects. This is contrasted with alternative medicine, which can provide a refreshing, drug-free, and effective option.

Alternative medicine can be a valid solution to chronic pain.

Chronic pain affects 100 million Americans, many of whom are also addicted to prescription opioids. Chiropractic, acupuncture, and meditation offer drug-free approaches that are clinically proven to improve chronic pain. Some hospitals now offer complimentary therapies like these as effective, refreshing alternatives to medications and surgery.

Physicians are realizing the importance of the microbiome

We’re learning that the trillions of bacteria which compose the microbiome are incredibly influential to our health and wellness. Not only are they the potential key to gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, their influence extends to other parts of our body, including our skin, our brain, and our immune system.

More conventional physicians are working hand-in-hand with alternative health practitioners than ever before. We’re realizing that they often know more than we do about the effects of diet and lifestyle choices on our health.

Dr Youn’s Recommendation of the Week

YOUN Beauty Retinol Eye Cream – Have you noticed crepey skin and fine wrinkling of your lower eyelids? If so, then it may be due to thinning of the skin with age. The skin of the eyelids is the thinnest skin of the body, and when it ages it can get thinner, looking wrinkled, crepey, and even transparent. Retinol (when applied in a low concentration) is a great treatment for thinning skin, as it can help the skin to gradually thicken with time.

Our YOUN Beauty Retinol Eye Cream is specially formulated to be gentle enough for the eyelids but with 1% retinol to provide a nice anti-aging benefit. Apply morning and evening for best results.

MSRP: $87
