Kybella
Kybella is an injectable treatment composed of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the GI tract that dissolves away fat. It’s purified and FDA approved for injection into the submentum (the fatty area under the chin) as a non-surgical way to thin a double chin.
Kybella typically necessitates anywhere between 2-3 treatments, each spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The actual treatment is quite quick, but can create an intense burning sensation that can persist for ten minutes or so. Once the initial burning subsides, the recovery is typically relatively painless.
The knock on Kybella (deserved or not) is that it can create a good amount of temporary swelling and numbness. This is not surprising because Kybella is working to destroy the fat, hence the swelling. Worst case scenario, I’ve seen the swelling last about six weeks.
So if you’d like to reduce the fat of your double chin and don’t want surgery, Kybella is a very effective non-surgical option. Keep in mind that it doesn’t tighten up skin, though.
