Breast Lifts Outpacing Breast Implants?

New survey results from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that since 2000, breast lifts have been outpacing breast implants by two-to-one. Although three times as many women undergo breast augmentations as breast implants, the number of women undergoing breast lifts has increased 70% since 2000. What is this from?

I think there are many causes to this trend. First, more and more women are undergoing breast enhancement surgery, period. Especially since the lifting of the FDA moratorium on silicone breast implants in November 2006, the numbers of women undergoing breast augmentation have increased impressively. Second, more and more women are losing weight via bariatric surgery. Losing weight can cause the breasts to shrink and droop, prompting women to have them lifted. Finally, I think patients are getting better educated on breast lifts. Nine years ago I saw countless women who were convinced by a local ENT (Ear Nose Throat) physician that lifts weren’t needed, and the implants would actually lift the breast. Now more patients are doing their research online and finding out for themselves that this just isn’t the case.

The big thing to keep in mind, though, is that breast lifts create scars. These scars are permanent. Although it’s a very effective surgery, the scars will be with you the rest of your life.

Even when you’re 90 and your breasts are droopy again.
