I Hate Goodbyes

Last week, my family said goodbye to my sweet Bella.

We adopted Bella just over five years ago, when she was eight. Bella’s owner was desperately looking for someone to adopt her, as Bella had an unknown illness which her owner was unable to care for.

We fell in love with her the first time we saw her, and very soon afterwards brought her home for the first time.

Within a few days we found out that her illness was more serious than we’d anticipated. She had cancer, specifically leukemia and lymphoma. Bella was given 1-2 years to live.

We started her on chemotherapy and her cancers went into remission.

Until about six months ago.

Bella is the smartest and sweetest dog we’ve ever met. Although she only usually came to me when she was scared, she bonded quickly with my wife Amy and was her shadow and constant companion. She even inspired us to adopt two more senior rescue dogs, Macks and Sammy (who died a year ago).

Yesterday Bella crossed over the rainbow bridge. She survived many years longer than anyone expected, and I take solace in the fact that she never lived a single day when she didn’t know she was loved immensely.

That is not the case with most rescue dogs or cats. There are so many beautiful, sweet souls who need homes. In memory of Bella, please consider adopting over buying. Petfinder.com is a wonderful resource to view needy pets in your area.
