Why Everyone Needs to Know About the Dirty Dozen!

The 2021 Dirty Dozen list is out!

This list, composed by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), consists of foods you should consider purchasing organic instead of conventional due to pesticide contamination.

The Dirty Dozen list is especially important when considering our children and the potential impacts that pesticides can have on their growing bodies. Research suggests that “pesticides may induce chronic health complications in children, including neurodevelopmental or behavioral problems, birth defects, asthma, and cancer,” according to a 2012 report by the American Academy of Pediatricians.

So here is the 2021 list of the Dirty Dozen fruits and vegetables according to the EWG. If affordable and available, try to purchase organic versions of these foods in order to avoid pesticides residues.

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Kale, Collard Greens, and Mustard Greens
  4. Nectarines
  5. Apples
  6. Grapes
  7. Cherries
  8. Peaches
  9. Pears
  10. Bell Peppers and Hot Peppers
  11. Celery
  12. Tomatoes

So what should you do if you can’t afford organic? Don’t let that stop you from eating fruits and veggies! Just make sure to wash them appropriately before enjoying them. Eating conventionally grown fruits and vegetables is much better than not eating them at all.
