Organic or Conventional – Why the Choice Matters

How important is it to buy and eat organic food?

If given the choice (and if it’s affordable), then I always recommend eating organic. Here’s why:

1. Conventionally grown produce (much of which is genetically modified, or GMO) can be subjected to the chemical herbicide glyphosate (Roundup). In fact, GMO foods are specifically designed to tolerate glyphosate so that farmers can spray more and get better yields. What you might not know is that glyphosate is a known carcinogen according to the World Health Organization. So by buying organic, you can avoid exposure to this potentially harmful chemical.

2. Organic produce has been shown to contain more phytonutrients than conventionally grown produce- between 19-60% more. Phytonutrients give the plant its distinctive color and flavor, but also convey antioxidant activity. And, if you’ve listened to my podcast or read my book, you know that antioxidants are our body’s way of protecting itself against free radicals. Because organic produce has more phytonutrients than conventionally-grown produce, it’s believed to be 20-40% more nutritious.

3. Organic foods have lower amounts of pesticides and pesticide residues than conventional foods. These pesticides have been shown to be detrimental to our health. In fact, one study found an increased risk of hypospadias (a penile disorder) in the children of women who ate conventional dairy products over organic.

So although organic foods are always more expensive than conventional, I recommend choosing organic when possible, especially those foods considered “the Dirty Dozen” by the Environmental Working Group. You can learn more about the Dirty Dozen by going to my recent blog post HERE.

Dr. Youn’s Recommendation of the Week:

Do you exfoliate your skin regularly? If not, then you should! Gently exfoliating your skin is a great way to remove the upper layer of dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling fresher, smoother, and rejuvenated. Plus, exfoliating sends a signal to the deeper skin cells to turn over more quickly, causing it to look and feel younger.

If you have “normal” skin, aim to exfoliate two or three times per week. For those with sensitive skin, once a week is usually sufficient.

I highly recommend the YOUN Beauty Advanced Exfoliating Cream. Made with natural ingredients, including Vitamin E and avocado oil, it’s my favorite method of exfoliation.

Cost: $48
