“The world turned upside down.” -‘Yorktown’ from Hamilton
One year ago everything changed.
I walked into my office on a Monday morning, ready for a full day of patients. At noon I decided to close the doors of YPS. My employees and I realized that our world was indeed turning upside down. We didn’t re-open for two and a half months.
So what did I do during that time, when so many of us were feeling a sense of helplessness and dread? I did what many of you did. I prayed. For my family, my friends, my colleagues, and my patients.
I meditated. Unable to sleep at night, I began meditating every evening. It helped. A lot.
I planned. Not only for making sure our household had the food and other items necessary for our survival, but for the eventual reopening of my office.
I enjoyed spending time with my family. During the past year, the four of us (six, if you include our pups!) have grown closer than ever before. It’s been a huge blessing. And every day I went to my empty office and did the only thing I could think to do.
I created. I took the pent-up energy usually spent on seeing patients and performing surgeries, and I created videos. I created to release my energy and re-channel my pent-up emotions. I created to tell myself that I was still being productive, albeit in a much different way than before. I created in the off-chance that maybe someone who was terrified and alone in the midst of this global pandemic might see one of my videos and be offered just a small escape from the fears and isolation of the times.
I created to make a difference in people’s lives. Even if that difference was only just a few moments of entertainment. Or a chuckle. Or a realization that we’re all in this mess together. And eventually we will get through it.
My contributions were tiny compared to my colleagues: the ER docs, anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, and all the hospital health care heroes who saved lives. I wished I could have helped in the ways they did.
A year ago the world turned upside down.
But we are still here.
Living. Breathing. And smiling. Because with each passing day we are getting closer and closer to being right side up.
