Losing weight is an incredible achievement, but many people are surprised to discover that the journey doesn’t always end when the number on the scale reaches its goal. Loose skin, stretch marks, and changes in body shape are common concerns—and there are plenty of misconceptions about what can and can’t be done. I recently recorded a podcast interview with fellow plastic surgeon Dr. Vinaya Rednam where we discussed this topic at length.
Here are five things from that interview that may surprise you.
Slow Weight Loss May Help—But Genetics Matter Even More
Many people assume that losing weight slowly guarantees tighter skin. While gradual weight loss does give the skin more time to adapt, genetics play an enormous role.
Some people lose hundreds of pounds and have surprisingly little excess skin, while others develop significant looseness despite taking things slowly. The quality of your collagen and skin elasticity is largely inherited, making them some of the biggest factors that determine how your skin responds.
Supporting Your Skin During Weight Loss May Make a Difference
There isn’t a magic cream or supplement that prevents loose skin but taking care of your skin while losing weight may help.
Staying hydrated, moisturizing regularly, eating plenty of protein, and considering collagen supplements like YOUN Beauty Supplemental Collagen can all provide your body with the support it needs to maintain healthy skin. While more research is needed, many experts believe these simple habits are worth incorporating into a weight-loss plan.
Non-Surgical Skin Tightening Has Its Limits
Social media is filled with advertisements promising dramatic tightening without surgery. The reality is more modest.
Treatments such as radiofrequency devices and microneedling can improve skin quality and provide mild tightening, but expectations are key. For many people, improvements may be in the range of 10–20%, which can be meaningful—but won’t match the dramatic changes that surgery can achieve.
Stretch Marks Can Be Improved—But Not Erased
Stretch marks are actually breaks in the collagen within the skin. Unfortunately, no treatment can completely eliminate them, other than cutting them out.
However, newer technologies can make them less noticeable. Radiofrequency microneedling (Morpheus8), COâ‚‚ laser resurfacing, and even camouflage tattooing can improve their appearance by tightening the skin, smoothing texture, and reducing the color contrast that makes stretch marks stand out.
You Don’t Need to Reach Your Exact Goal Weight Before Exploring Surgery
Many people think they need to hit their perfect goal weight before even talking to a plastic surgeon. In reality, it’s often helpful to begin researching your options when you’re within about 10 pounds of your desired weight.
Starting early gives you time to learn about procedures, meet with surgeons, and develop a plan for the final stage of your transformation.
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is this:Â loose skin isn’t a sign that you’ve done something wrong. For many people, it’s simply evidence of an extraordinary accomplishment. And thanks to advances in both surgical and non-surgical treatments, there are more options than ever to help you feel comfortable and confident in the body you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
