Here are some pretty interesting new items in plastic surgery that I think you’ll find interesting!

1. Today the FDA approved the latest cosmetic botulinum toxin called Daxxify. This injectable neurotoxin has been in development for years, so it’s great that the FDA finally acted on its application. Daxxify is touted as having a longer duration of action than Botox, upwards of six months. Since most patients find Botox and Dysport treatments last around 3-4 months, this can be a game changer in our field. Daxxify hasn’t hit offices yet, (so please don’t call for it!) but I’ll be sure to let you know when it does!

2. There is a new but very rare concern with breast implants called Breast Implant Associated Squamous Cell Carcinoma (BIA SCC). This is an aggressive tumor that appears to grow in the capsule (scar tissue pocket) surrounding implants. There have been only 16 cases so far in the scientific literature, and the average time between implantation and cancer diagnosis is 22.7 years. Because it’s so rare, there is fairly little information on it. At this point, it’s not something I would be overly concerned about due to its rarity. I will share more with you as we learn more.

3. On a lighter note, you may remember last year the actor Zac Efron caused quite a stir due to the change in shape of his face. He was accused by many (not me) of having had plastic surgery and excessive injections of filler. Well, Zac has come clean, explaining in a recent interview that the facial changes were due to a fractured jaw resulting in temporary overgrowth of his masseter muscles! I’ve treated many jaw fractures in the past and have never heard of this happening, but who knows?
