👄 Lip Lifts, Acne Scars, Face Estrogen, Explants, and More…

Today I thought it would be a good idea to answer more of your questions about skin, plastic surgery, and more! Here we go!

What do you think about estrogen face creams?

Studies show that applying topical estrogen to postmenopausal facial skin can help increase collagen production. However, if a woman is already on hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the benefits of estrogen face cream in addition to HRT are still unknown.

If you are post-menopausal and interested in trying estrogen face creams, speak with your physician. Real estrogen creams are only sold via a prescription.

Should I get a lip lift? I’m 35 and don’t like my thin upper lip.

NO! Lip lifts (also called the bullhorn lip lift) were described many decades ago and shorten the upper lip by excising skin from the base of the nose. It’s very effective but creates a permanent, and usually visible, scar underneath the nose.

Since older people scar better than younger (less collagen buildup), I save this operation for my patients over the age of 60. That way you reduce the risk of an unsightly scar right on the front of your face.

What is the best treatment for acne scarring?

Unfortunately, there is no eraser for acne scars. Treatments can lessen their appearance but not get rid of them altogether. Currently, most doctors would agree that the best non-invasive option is a series of ablative fractional laser treatments. These can improve the smoothless of the skin and reduce, but not eliminate, the appearance of acne scars.

At YPS we use our DEKA fractional CO2 laser for acne scarring. The treatment is performed with topical numbing creams and works great for scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and more. Click HERE if you would like a complimentary consultation with our skin care specialists!

Can you remove breast implants (explant) without having a lift?

YES. The majority of my explant patients don’t undergo a lift. Lifts are necessary in certain cases where a large implant is removed or when the patient is droopy starting out and would benefit from a lift with or without the explant.

In most cases where a small to moderate implant is removed a lift isn’t absolutely necessary.

How old were you when you became a board-certified plastic surgeon?

After graduating high school, I went to Kalamazoo College for four years, medical school at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine for four years, then did a combined five year general and plastic surgery residency at Michigan State in Grand Rapids. I finished my training by doing a one year aesthetic plastic surgery fellowship at Beverly Hills Body in Beverly Hills, California.

I started YOUN Plastic Surgery in Rochester Hills, Michigan in 2004 and became board-certified in 2005, at the age of 32!
