I recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica where I visited the headquarters of Establishment Labs, the inventors of the Motiva breast implant and the new Preservé Breast Enhancement technique. I left convinced that these two innovations are the biggest we’ve had in plastic surgery in years.
Motiva implants were first introduced 15 years ago and finally received FDA approval in 2024 after approximately 4 million implants were placed worldwide. They are the newest generation of implants, and studies show that their complication rate appears to be significantly lower than the implants we’ve been using up until now.
They have a Smooth Silk surface, which can lower the degree of bacterial attachment and inflammation, resulting in a lower risk of complications like capsular contracture. The implants also have a Monobloc construction, where the inner cohesive silicone gel fuses with the outer silicone rubber shell for a potentially lower rate of rupture. I’ve been using Motiva implants for my patients for over a year now and have seen great results.
Preservé is a new approach to surgery which utilizes short incisions, smaller implants, less trauma to the body, and a quicker and easier recovery. This surgery is only being practiced by a small number of surgeons in the United States, and I’m fortunate to be one of approximately 50 who are now completely trained in the procedure.
I’m excited to offer Preservé to my patients along with Motiva implants to get them the absolute best results possible. Obviously, implants aren’t for everyone and come with the risk of complications. They are also not lifetime devices.
