When we think about looking and feeling great, you might think that the most important thing is sunscreen, not smoking, skin care, or, God forbid, plastic surgery. But what would you say if I told you the real secret to looking and feeling your best lies in the health of your gut?
Doctors and scientists are learning that the health of our gut is one of the most important things to our overall health and even our appearance. And it’s the trillions of bacteria that colonize our gut, known as our microbiome, that exert the most effects. The health of our gut microbiome can exert major effects on your weight, digestion, energy, and skin!
But there are ways to improving your gut health! Here are 5 tips that not only will you feel better inside, but you’ll look better outside, too.
Take a probiotic every day – The key here is to make sure you get enough CFU (colony forming units). There are trillions of bacteria in our intestines, so any probiotic must have between 5 to 15 billion CFU to be truly effective.
Eat fermented foods – Fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, and kombucha are filled with beneficial bacteria for your gut. They can even help with bloating issues!
Add prebiotics to your diet – Prebiotics feed the bacteria in your gut. The easiest way to consume prebiotics is to eat the rainbow, but some of the foods that contain the most include apples, berries, and green vegetables.
Avoid dairy and gluten – Unfortunately neither of these are good for your gut. Sixty-eight percent of world’s population is lactose intolerant – including 95 percent of Asians and between 50-80 percent of African Americans and Latinos. The proteins in milk (casein and whey) have been shown to be inflammatory. Gluten can increase the permeability of your intestinal lining, creating a condition called leaky gut. This has been associated with an increase in inflammation of the body, including skin conditions like acne and eczema.
Reduce stress by meditating – Meditation for even 10 minutes a day can do wonders for your stress level. I started adding this to my routine last year!
Now, get going to better gut health!
