I recently returned from a retreat hosted by the scrubs company Figs. They flew approximately 80 Figs ambassadors to Ojai, California on a health retreat where we did various activities like pickleball, Pilates, yoga, meditation, mindfulness classes, and even had a sound bath session!
The other ambassadors are all online influencers in the health space, including other physicians, dentists, veterinarians, nurses, and PA’s. The event was eye-opening for me, as I was probably the second oldest ambassador there. Most of them were in their twenties and early thirties.
This event gave me some time to reflect on my own physical and mental health. I discovered that many of my younger colleagues are struggling with both of these, often due to the stressors and demands of their careers. Medicine (both human and veterinary) often neglects the health of the actual providers.
In that vein, as a physician in private practice over 20 years, I believe sharing my journey and what I’ve learned with my younger colleagues was helpful for them and me.
Here are some things I shared with them:
Move. In all directions. Exercise is one of the big keys to longevity and health, but it’s important to do many types of exercises (hint: just walking isn’t enough) in order to make sure you use both slow and fast twitch muscle fibers.
Yoga and meditation will change your life. They have changed mine. For years I assumed I would retire on disability due to low back issues. After doing regular yoga classes for the past several years this is no longer the case.
Find purpose outside yourself and your family. This is key, especially if you decide not to have children or become an empty nester. For me, it’s senior dog rescue. What is it for you?
Learn new things and meet new people. Neuroplasticity refers to the creation of new neuronal connections in your brain. These new connections are made when you expose yourself to new experiences. It’s one of the keys to keeping your brain young and dynamic as you age.
Figs is working on various campaigns to advocate for health care providers across the country. I consider it a privilege to partner with them to hopefully better the lives of my colleagues and friends. I’m looking forward to sharing with you what we do together in the future!

- Exercise that’s good and bad for your skin
- And a lot more!
We had a fascinating discussion on a load of topics that I think you’ll find fascinating! Check out The Skincare Industry’s Biggest Lies (And What Really Works) with Dr. Dustin Portela on The Doctor Youn Show!
