What if you could change the color of your eyes to blue, green, or even purple, permanently? Some people are doing just that, and the videos of their dramatic changes are going viral on social media.
It’s called laser keratopigmentation, and it’s a procedure that’s gaining more eyes than ever before. During this operation, an ophthalmologist uses a laser to make a channel underneath the cornea of the eye. A specialized dye is then injected underneath the cornea, causing it to change color.
Want steel grey eyes? How about riviera blue? Or bright purple? They are all possible using this technique.
So should you toss your colored contact lenses away and rush to have laser keratopigmentation? Not so fast…
This procedure is not without risk. In 2024 the American Academy of Ophthalmology issued a warning on the dangers of eye color changing procedures. These procedures are NOT FDA approved.
Risks include damage to the cornea that could lead to cloudiness, light sensitivity, reaction to the dye, and even blindness. To be fair, there have been no reported cases of blindness with cosmetic keratopigmentation yet, but the number of patients undergoing the procedure is fairly low. It could only be a matter of time before it happens.
So although these procedures are dramatic and eye-catching, I recommend staying away from them.
