The biggest fear my patients have is getting botched. You’ve seen it on the news, in social media, and on reality TV. So, if you’re considering a cosmetic procedure, what are some simple steps you can take to avoid getting botched? Here are some of my tips!
- Don’t smoke ANYTHING for one month prior to surgery. This means no cigarettes, no cigars, no hookah, no weed, no vapes, NOTHING. Recent studies are showing that vaping (even without nicotine) has similar negative effects on wound healing as cigarette smoking. We don’t have studies on m****uana, but we should assume its effects are similar as well.
- Deep plane facelifts are a social media fad. More and more doctors are jumping on the deep plane facelift bandwagon because it’s trendy and surgeons charge more for it compared to the less invasive (and less risky) SMAS facelift. Buyer beware! The learning curve is steep with this operation. You don’t want an inexperienced doctor to practice it on you.
- Considering breast implants? Use the inframammary (crease below the breast) incision ONLY. Some plastic surgeons are inserting implants through the armpit, the areola, and even through the belly button. Beware these approaches, because studies show they have a higher complication rate.
- Don’t get liposuction if you’re thin. Liposuction is the gold standard for removing stubborn areas of unwanted fat. It leaves behind scar tissue, though. This scar tissue can be visible (and make the skin look lumpy and deformed) if liposuction is overdone or performed on someone who is already thin. For small areas of mild unwanted fat, consider Sculpsure instead, a non-invasive laser that reduces fat thickness by approximately 20%.
- Wear at-home leg compression if you’re having long surgery. You can now purchase a similar device as we use in the hospital to prevent blood clots after long operations. These leg compression devices massage your calves to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT). You can find one on Amazon HERE.
