Have you heard of the Dirty Dozen?
Every year since 2004, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) – a non-profit, non-partisan environmental organization – ranks the worst foods in regards to pesticide contamination. These are foods which you should consider purchasing organic instead of conventional. This year, for the third year in a row, strawberries topped the list of the Dirty Dozen. In fact, one single sample of strawberries was contaminated with 20 different pesticides! Spinach, ranked number two, had 1.8 times as much pesticide residue by weight than any other crop.
The Dirty Dozen list is especially important when considering our children and the potential impacts of pesticide contaminants on their growing bodies. Research “suggests that pesticides may induce chronic health complications in children, including neurodevelopmental or behavioral problems, birth defects, asthma, and cancer,” noted the authors of a 2012 American Academy of Pediatricians report quoted by the EWG.
So here is the list of the Dirty Dozen fruits and vegetables according to the EWG. If affordable and available, try to purchase organic versions of these foods to avoid the pesticides.
